Detox Me

kale_ginger_detox_smoothie_ingredientsMuch of the fitness and food buzz for 2014 is revolved around detoxes and juice cleanses.  While I love them just as much as the next health nut, the truth is that a strict detox plan is unpractical and inconvenient to maintain with my schedule. What I have discovered is that you don’t have to drink only juice for 5 days straight to give your body a healthy new start.  When my body is craving a reboot after a long week of too much coffee and not enough sleep, I look toward these three meals to get back on track and feeling good without the inconvenience and expense of a typical detox.  With these recipes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner I end the weekend feeling reenergized, lighter, and cleansed of impurities.

Breakfast: Kale Ginger Detox Smoothie

Fruits and veggies are high in fiber and packed with nutrients for your body. They help to detox by flushing out toxins and replacing them with vitamins and minerals.  I found this detox smoothie on Oh My Veggies and I love it not only because I’m a smoothie fiend, but also because it gives your morning the perfect jump start to feeling back on track.  This purifying beverage contains kale to cleanse the kidneys and ginger to help stimulate bile flow in your gall bladder.

rainbow saladLunch: Detox Rainbow Salad

One of the easiest ways to eat healthy without too much thought is to make sure that there are lots of colors on your plate.  The Skinny Fork provided me with a delicious and healthy detox recipe filled with an abundance of vegetables. The rainbow salad consists of romaine, red cabbage, hearts of cauliflower, carrots, and broccoli. The red cabbage is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant rich food, the cauliflower acts as another antioxidant rich food that also boosts detoxing the body, and the broccoli is known to relieve stress and detox the body!

Dinner: Black Bean and Quinoa Veggie Burger

For dinner, I detox with Prevention RD‘s Black Bean and Quinoa Veggie Burger.  The burgers are full of nutrition and in fact stats couldn’t be more impressive (7.2 grams of fiber and 4.3 grams of fat per burger!) This recipe has lots of flavor and is the perfect way to end the day feeling satisfied and rejuvenated.

Find Your Balance

9864da9bb46926f471752ee989b539f4-1A key element to feeling my best is finding and maintaining a balanced lifestyle.  I am a full time college student, a part time intern, a sorority sister, and a fitness enthusiast. It’s no secret that maintaining a balanced lifestyle is no easy task. In the midst of our crazy, hectic schedules it becomes difficult to find stability.

After having spent the last semester studying abroad in Florence, Italy, adjusting to life back in LA is a much more difficult task than I anticipated.  For anyone adjusting to a new routine or new schedule, it is important to stay grounded, to stay balanced.  These 5 helpful tips from Web MD are little reminders of what we can do daily to make sure to maintain a happy and healthy lifestyle.

1.  Build downtime into your schedule

2. Drop activities that sap your time or energy

3. Rethink your errands

4. Get Moving

5.  Remember that a little relaxation goes a long way

DSC_0051In addition to these helpful tips, I started by making one personalized goal for myself that I hope will help ease the process of getting back on track and feeling fit.  My goal this semester is to eat less sugar (I have a terrible sweet tooth) and to eat more greens.  My favorite way to get extra vitamins and vegetables into my diet is through green smoothies.  One of my biggest inspirations for being fit and making smoothies is a friend of mine, Jordan Younger, a 23-year-old yoga junkie and lover of all things vegan.  In her blog, The Blonde Vegan, she talks about her struggle to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle and how turning vegan was able to guide her down that path.  One of my favorite recipes on her blog is “The Balanced Smoothie.”  This recipe resonated with me and is also made with some of my favorite ingredients like banana, kale, and mint leaves.  Not only does it look darn good, but it tastes just as amazing.  If you want the full recipe or just want to learn more about the inspirational woman behind The Blonde Vegan, click here.  I hope that I can encourage and inspire you in the same way she inspired me.  It’s never to late to take the first step toward living a healthier and happier life.
